There is a lot of talk these days about making learning interesting for children, and a lot of effort is directed towards this. Yet the importance of good questions in making learning interesting is often not realised.
A good question challenges and stimulates the child to think deeper, to apply the concepts learnt and gives the child a sense of satisfaction at having mastered the concepts. A student can be stimulated and scintillated by a challenging question.
A good question if framed correctly, can help the teacher understand the thought process in the mind of the student while solving the problem. It also provides the teacher with a unique opportunity to exercise her creativity and create something original. In a nutshell, good questions help and contribute in developing thinking individuals. Therefore designing good questions is an art and a science.
Keeping this in view, an educational organisation outside the Government, Educational Initiatives Pvt Ltd (EI) is focused exclusively on assessment and learning outcomes measurement in school education. Run by a group of IIMA alumni, EI has created and administers the ASSET Test, India’s largest diagnostic assessment test that is taken by over 250,000 students all over India every year. The test, conducted for classes 3 to 9, assesses students’ comprehension in mathematics, science and English; Hindi and social science are optional tests. EI then evaluates the performance of each student, each class and the school, and provides consultancy on where the school stands on various parameters compared to other schools across the country. A panel of experienced teachers and experts assess their questions. Till now 4000 teachers have registered for it. Schools like Podar International have participated from Nashik.
The question entries can be sent till October 4. Those interested in sending questions can log on to
www.ei-india.com.
EI would enrol the teachers in their mailing list for regular education related information.
